Castles and palaces are typical of many European cities, and Budapest, the capital of Hungary, is no exception. There we can find truly incredible structures, but none like the Buda Castle, one of the most famous in the whole country. Do you want to know it? Come with us to find out!
The Hungarians, also known as Magyars, did not settle in the territory that makes up present-day Budapest until the end of the 9th century, after the Roman settlements in the area disappeared.
From the beginning, the Magyars had constant fights with other peoples, especially the Mongols, Turks, and Romanians. To protect Budapest, the city that had become their most important place, a military fortress was created on top of a hill, in this way, the first bases of what would one day be Buda Castle were created.
The palace that we see today was not built until the beginning of the 14th century, and due to a series of wars and battles with the main rivals of the Hungarians, it had to be rebuilt many times, and each time its appearance changed. , at the same time that the size of the building was expanding.
Despite this, no warfare damaged the Budapest Castle as much as World War II. By the end of this war, at least half of the palace had completely disappeared.
At the end of World War II, Hungary came under Soviet control, who decided that Buda Castle should be rebuilt, but following a different style from the original.
The renovations of the palace happened slowly, but when it was finished, its appearance was much more severe and it almost did not look like a castle that, once, belonged to royalty.
The Soviets also tried to erase all traces of the former Hungarian Royal Family, so many original decorations as well as paintings, sculptures and ornaments were removed from the site.
The great halls, which were rooms for the nobles and spaces for the kings, were turned into exhibition rooms, leaving some completely empty.
After Hungary ceased to be controlled by the Soviet Union, Buda Castle became a cultural space of great importance, since it is currently home to such outstanding institutions as the Budapest History Museum, the National Library and the Gallery. National of Hungary.
This palace is one of the most notorious must-sees in the country, so it should be part of your itinerary. In addition to the main building of the castle, visiting it is visiting its beautiful gardens, which in themselves are a tourist attraction.
Similarly, the Buda Castle is a neighbor of such interesting places as the Budapest Citadel, the Parish Church of the Center and the Rudas Spa.
Keep in mind that entry to the gardens and various areas of the palace is free, but in order to enjoy the museums and the gallery, you will need to buy a ticket.
If you want to visit it, schedule your visit between Tuesday to Sunday, when the Buda Castle is open and welcomes all its visitors.
