History of the Liberty Bridge

Inaugurated in 1896, this bridge is part of the city’s Small Boulevard and connects Mount Gellért and the Customs Square. Before obtaining its current name, it was baptized as Francisco José, in honor of the emperor who participated in its inauguration.

Formerly, Budapest only had two public bridges and one railway. After applying a law, the necessary money was obtained for the construction of a fourth bridge. Two years after its inauguration, the first trams began to pass through there, and then buses were incorporated. But during World War II it was damaged, so it had to be renovated.

For several years the bridge has already allowed the passage of bicycles, cars and pedestrians that pass through it daily, along with the trams that are located in the lanes.

The interesting construction of the Liberty Bridge

The Liberty Bridge was designed by János Feketeházy. At first glance it has the structure of a chain bridge, the most common model at the time of its construction.

The bridge is 333.6 meters long and 20.1 meters wide, making it the shortest of all the bridges in the city. During the day its green color can be appreciated while at night the lights that decorate it give it a more elegant shape.

The masts are decorated with bronze statues on top depicting Turul, a figure from Hungarian mythology. It is a bird from Hungarian legends, which resembles the saker falcon. His image can be seen in various parts of the country and the capital.
