for many, many centuries. At the head of the country were several monarchs, but one of those who stands out the most is Queen Mar\u00eda I.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>This sovereign reigned for decades, and her mandate remains one of the longest in Portuguese history. She was a successful regent, although there was a problem, she could not have heirs.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Just as she was a woman of politics, Maria I was also highly religious, so she did not hesitate to offer a promise if she managed to have a male child. When his heir came to the world, the Portuguese queen kept her word and ordered the construction of the Basilica da Estela.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>The construction of this great temple was a feat for its time, and the most prominent architects and engineers worked there.
