the city is due to. And it is that <strong>Istv\u00e1n Dob\u00f3<\/strong> was a Hungarian soldier, known for being the successful defender of Eger. Dob\u00f3 was a member of the Magyar nobility and fought against the Ottomans in 1552.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Dob\u00f3 became commander of Eger Castle in 1549. He became famous for his successful defense of the castle during the siege of 1552.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>In that siege, two thousand defenders resisted the attack of more than eight thousand Ottoman soldiers. As a reward, Dob\u00f3 became the owner of the Transylvanian castles of D\u00e9va and Sgamos\u00fajv\u00e1r.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>However, when he was accused of betraying the king, Dob\u00f3 spent several years imprisoned in the castle of Pozsony.
