href=\"https:\/\/tripaim.com\/blog\/en\/amsterdam-en\/amsterdam\"><span style=\"color: #842000;\"><strong>Amsterdam<\/strong><\/span><\/a> was even known by that name, the Begijnhof courtyard was already in the most central area of the city.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>This was founded in the middle of the 10th century, when the metropolis was nothing more than a small fishing village. In the houses near the Beginjhof courtyard, lived a group of nuns, dedicated to serving the most disadvantaged, helping the local diocese and serving in the small neighborhood chapel.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>These nuns, known as Beguines, were not nuns nor did they belong to any formal order. In it we can also find some of the most important medieval remains in the entire city.<\/p><p><br><\/p>\n<p>One of them is the Houten Huis house, this is one of the last two wooden residences still standing in Amsterdam. Built sometime in the 14th century, the Houten Huis dates from a time when wooden buildings were still allowed, and the main building element was not bricks.<\/p><p><br><\/p>\n<p>Similarly, in <strong>Begijnhof<\/strong> we find two chapels, one is easily recognizable, and it bears the name of Englese Kerk. While the other is much more discreet, and with reasons, since it is a small Catholic church.<\/p><p><br><\/p>\n<p>This temple, which belonged to the Beguines, Christian community that was kept underground for centuries, due to the prohibition of Catholicism that prevailed in the Netherlands. Today, it is a symbol of the now-defunct Beguine sisters and of Amsterdam&#8217;s Catholic history.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ac14b6a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ac14b6a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The last Beguine of Begijnhof<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7b73140 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7b73140\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Until the end of the 20th century the Begijnhof continued to host devout women. Cornelia Johanna Catherina Arens was the last Beguine and died in 1971, ending a tradition of more than 600 years. Nevertheless, the place continues to be a home for single women and widows, preserving part of its original function.<br><br><\/p><p>The Beguines lived in community and devoted themselves to prayer and charity without taking perpetual vows; they were not nuns in the traditional sense. Apparently before her death, Cornelia asked to be buried outside the <strong>Begijnhof<\/strong>, as she felt that the community had become too much over time.<br><br><\/p><p>Cornelia&#8217;s wish was
