Unfortunately, this period of growth came to an abrupt end, when the various Slavic tribes that inhabited other areas of Dalmatia began their attacks against the coastal populations.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Dubrovnik was born as a refuge for Roman citizens fleeing besieged towns, and over time it became an enclave for the Latin culture of the Adriatic Sea.
