Among the buildings that were built to house the government headquarters, was the <strong>Capitol<\/strong>.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>This was inaugurated in 1929, and originally it was going to be the official meeting place of the main powers of the Cuban government, which at that time were the parliament and the senate. However, after the Cuban Revolution, the Capitol building became the headquarters of the Ministry of Science and Technology.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Likewise, this great architectural work continued to be the most outstanding in the entire Cuban capital for many more years, but the political and geographical isolation of the island prevented it from being better known internationally.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Despite this, Havana is increasingly open to tourists, both local and foreign, which has given the city and its monuments a more renewed air. But that&#8217;s not all, inside the Capitol it is possible to find a true sculptural treasure, made up mostly of statues made by the Italian sculptor, Angelo Zanelli.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>In addition, the Capitol hides a few curiosities, which make it a building as imposing as it is peculiar. The most interesting of these oddities is that, just below its dome, there is a 25-carat diamond. This jewel is said to have belonged to Nicholas II, the last Tsar of Russia.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>The Capitol diamond marked kilometer zero of all Cuban highways, and was seen as the symbol that began the nation&#8217;s progress.
