La construcci\u00f3n es peculiar, ya que tiene forma de carabela, un tipo de barco muy popular durante la Era de los Descubrimientos.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Esta carabela, de la que solo est\u00e1 representada su parte frontal, tiene como pilar la Espada de la Dinast\u00eda de Av\u00eds, que rein\u00f3 en Portugal por m\u00e1s de tres siglos. A los lados, est\u00e1n los escudos lusos y en las bases inferiores, las estatuas de los descubridores, alineadas en dos filas.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>El m\u00e1s c\u00e9lebre de todos ellos es Enrique el Navegante, que se encuentra liderando ambas hileras. Enrique el Navegante fue un noble portugu\u00e9s, miembro de la familia real, qui\u00e9n estableci\u00f3 muchas de las primeras rutas comerciales lusas por las costas de \u00c1frica.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Acompa\u00f1\u00e1ndolo, est\u00e1n Alfonso V de Portugal, monarca lusitano, Vasco de Gama, destacado marinero y descubridor, Bartolom\u00e9 D\u00edaz, el primer europeo que cruz\u00f3 hac\u00eda la India por el Cabo de la Buena Esperanza, entre otros.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>De igual manera, el <strong>Monumento a los Descubridores<\/strong> fue construido para conmemorar la vida de Enrique el Navegante, aunque tuvo que edificarse en dos ocasiones diferentes.
