Los venecianos controlaban el comercio, el intercambio de bienes, la pol\u00edtica regional y tambi\u00e9n se asentaban en distintos puertos, con el fin de aumentar su alcance e influencia.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Estos asentamientos rara vez eran pac\u00edficos, ya que era com\u00fan tomar lugares que pertenec\u00edan a otra naci\u00f3n o que eran totalmente independientes. Este fue el caso de Ragusa, el antiguo nombre de Dubrovnik, que en aquella \u00e9poca era una ciudad estado aut\u00f3noma.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Los habitantes de esta metr\u00f3poli costera no quer\u00edan perder su libertad frente a los venecianos, por lo que fortificaron sus murallas y crearon nuevos enclaves de defensa. Esta disparidad tiene dos razones, la primera es que el punto de defensa m\u00e1s importante era hacia el mar, por lo que la protecci\u00f3n deb\u00eda ser mayor.
