Home | Leon | What you can't miss in Leon | Sculpture of Antoni Gaudí
I am in Leon and somewhat tired after touring the historic center of the city. I sit on a bench occupied by a man who is familiar to me, now I fall, it is the figure of Antoni Gaudí, the emblematic Catalan architect.
And it is that the sculpture is so well done, with so much realism, that more than one clueless sits down and asks the time of the man who is sitting.
We are in the Plaza de San Marcelo next to the Palacio de los Guzmanes and in front of the Palacio de los Botines, one of the buildings created by the illustrious Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí and which resembles a medieval fortress. The Palacio de los Botines is one of the three works that Gaudí made outside of Catalonia.
The public sculpture made in bronze is the work of the Oviedo sculptor Jose Luis Fernández who presents the life-size figure of Gaudí sitting on a bench, with a pensive face and taking notes in a notebook about one of his works.
On the opposite side of the bench is a stylized dove observing the scene. The pigeon is due to the common presence of these birds in the square and that is why the Plaza de San Marcelo is also known as the Pigeons Square.
The sculpture cast in 1998 has been in this place for a long time and has become an integral part of the environment for the inhabitants of Leon. Nobody but tourists and visitors are struck by the sculpture and it is these who cannot resist sitting next to the genius to take a selfie.
