Visits in Salvador de Bahia

Walking through the Peleourinho

The day begins in the historic center of the city and one of its great attractions, the Peleourinho, a neighborhood full of life and color. The idea must be to get lost in its cobbled streets dotted with beautiful Portuguese-style colonial buildings painted in different colors.

During the walk you will discover the city that was the capital of Brazil for more than 200 years. Its rich architecture, its squares and above all, its churches. It is said that in Salvador you can go to a different church every day for a whole year.

In the center of the historic neighborhood is the Iglesia Convento de San Francisco and the walk will take the traveler to its door. You have to enter and enjoy this baroque church, loaded with more than 100 kilos of gold and located in the top 10 of the most beautiful churches in Brazil. The quiet and beautiful cloister, decorated with Portuguese tiles, is a haven of peace and the place to sit and let the silence and peace give the traveler strength to continue discovering Salvador.

How is Salvador de Bahia

Monument to the Fallen Cross

At some point our steps must take us to the Monument to the Fallen Cross. This large cross, measuring 12 meters, commemorates the church that occupied that same space until 1933 and is also a fantastic viewpoint over the Bay of All Saints.

Scattered around the center and some very close to the monument, there are numerous typical representations of the Camdomblé. It is a religion that combines Catholic origins and African cults, making it a unique and beautiful cult.

One day in Salvador de Bahia

The Lacerda Elevator experience

After all this, we are getting closer to the sea. To do this, you can take one of the four elevators that link the upper city and the lower city. The Lacerda elevator was inaugurated in 1873 and is a whopping 72 meters high, being able to transport more than 120 people in 22 seconds. Despite the speed, the views of the city and the bay are spectacular.

Already in the lower part, at sea level, is the Mercado Modelo. It is a beautiful building that houses more than 250 craft shops of all kinds. Taking a walk through this place is a real pleasure for the senses and even for those who are not fond of shopping, it will be a real luxury to visit it.

Continue the walk through the port. In front, the Fort of San Marcelo. Built on a sandbar in the bay, in the 17th century, this fort was designed to protect the city from pirates and invasions.

Ending a day in Salvador de Bahia

It is easy for us to find a Capoeira show on the street, a cultural expression that combines dance with self-defense.

After dinner in one of the many restaurants in the port, a great day in Salvador de Bahía can be ended. Although, we still have a lot to see and do in this city.

We leave the Barra neighborhood for another day, with its beaches of crystal clear water and the majestic lighthouse that presides over it. We also leave the Paseo Marítimo and a multitude of beautiful palaces. We leave things as beautiful as the views for the next day, because although a day in Salvador is perfect, it is never enough.
