Inert over the waters of the Beagle Channel, lonely, indifferent and permanently vigilant of the Bay of Ushuaia, the Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse reminds us with its presence where the known world ends and where the road to Antarctica begins, it is one of the most representative postcards from Ushuaia.
Frigate Captain Louis Ferdinand Martial aboard La Romanche and representing the French navy up on a scientific expedition to Cape Horn between 1882 and 1883, baptizing the set of islets with the name Éclaireurs, according to the dictionary the translation would be Explorers.
From that adventure there is a model of the ship La Romanche in the Maritime Museum of Ushuaia, which occupies the old Ushuaia prison. The important geographical information collected on the trip is today in the Museum of Man in France.
In front of the bay of Ushuaia, five miles away is one of these islets, where the Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse is located, a cylindrical brick structure of 3 meters in diameter and 11 meters high that reaches 22.5 meters above sea level .
The uninhabited lighthouse is closed to the public, its red and white stripes in the distance are confused with the Austrian flag, it is equipped with solar panels, it operates automatically and remotely controlled since December 23, 1920. It currently has an optical scope of 11 kilometers.
The name of the Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse is a consequence of the name of the islets despite the fact that in many places it is referred to as the Lighthouse at the End of the World, which is actually further east and is the Lighthouse of San Juan de Salvamento, on the island of the States.
