Thailand is famous for its many markets, ideal to get the most incredible souvenirs and to get into the daily life of the city. The busiest of them all is the Chatuchak Market, which stands out for its wonderful colors and its wide variety of offers. Do you want to know it? Come with us!
Although it is quite a place visited by tourists and locals, the Chatuchak Market is relatively new, especially when compared to other places in Bangkok.
The first predecessor of this market, opened its doors in the 1940s, when Thai law established that all cities should have their own commercial space. This was relocated several times, until it was established next to Chatuchak Park.
This is where the name of this magnificent market comes from, which has more than 15,000 stalls, where everything is sold. It does not matter if you are looking for clothes, shoes, household items, handicrafts or perhaps some eccentricity that reminds you of your trip to Thailand, rest assured that in the Chatuchak Market you will find what you want.
If you plan on going to the biggest market in Bangkok, there are a few things you need to know before you hit the road. The first is that although this is a fairly popular shopping spot, it is only open on weekends and holidays. So you must take into account which of these days is more convenient for your visit.
Also, keep in mind that this is an incredibly large market, covering an area of 140,000m². Come on, it’s not just big, it’s huge. Its size makes Chatuchak Market the ideal place to find bargains and haggle prices, but it is also easy to get lost in its myriad of aisles, especially if you are visiting for the first time.
For this reason, we recommend that you use one of its three official entrances. If you are looking for a guide, in the third entry they will give you a map of the market, which is translated into English. This brochure specifies the different sections of the place, and shows what is sold in each of these spaces, so you can take advantage of your time and go to the bazaars that interest you the most.
Similarly, do not forget that entry to the Chatuchak Market is free, and that the prices of the products can be negotiated with the vendors. So it is the ideal alternative if you want to take care of your budget.
One of the great charms of the Chatuchak Market is its gastronomic variety. Here you can try almost all the typical dishes of the local gastronomy, and even risk trying some of the most peculiar recipes of Thailand, which can only be found in the stalls of its main market.
It is important to note that food prices are not usually bargained, as they are with most other products. But don’t worry, this is usually very accessible, so you won’t have to invest too much money to enjoy a good lunch or an unforgettable dinner.
Lastly, make sure you have cash, as the use of credit cards is rare in the Chatuchak Market, and rest assured that you don’t want to leave empty-handed.
