The capital of Spain has incredible squares, such as La Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor, however, one that has the honor of being known as the most popular in Madrid, that is Plaza de Cibeles. Easily recognizable for its fountain and the buildings that surround it, to get to know this European city, you have to go through Cibeles.
It is common that, in many places, there are reference points that not only allow you to better locate in the city where you are, but also have such cultural importance that you can immediately associate them with a person, a historical event or even with a Sports team.
That is the case of Plaza Cibeles, which by its own right is part of Madrid’s identity. This square connects the different districts of Madrid, and forms one of the busiest vehicular crossings in the Spanish capital.
Likewise, one cannot talk about Cibeles without mentioning the sport, since this is where the victories of local teams are traditionally celebrated, as well as those of the different national teams.
Do you want to know a little more about this square? We invite you to continue reading!
Cibeles was created in 1570, at that time, it was more of a garden than a square, but it was already in its current place. Much later, in 1895, its fountain was installed, this is adorned by a large sculpture of the ancient Greek goddess Cybele, who leads a powerful carriage powered by lions.
Since then, the place is known as Plaza Cibeles, and it is distinguished from other Madrid squares by its circular shape. In the same way, the area occupied by the square is the union of several streets and avenues that are very busy, not by people, but by cars.
Another of the characteristics of Plaza Cibeles are the buildings that surround it, all of great architectural beauty and governmental importance. Among them we can mention the Palacio de Linares, the headquarters of the Bank of Spain, the Palacio de Buenavista that functions as the center of the General Headquarters of the Spanish Army and the Palacio de Cibeles.
In addition, the square also has the company of some very important neighbors, such as the Instituto Cervantes, Puerta de Alcalá, Calle de Alcalá, and the Círculo de Bellas Artes.
Spending a few days in Madrid is a fabulous experience, and it is even more so if you can go to Plaza de Cibeles. Although you must be careful, remember that this is a busy place, with wide streets and little space for pedestrian crossing.
One of the best way to enjoy Plaza Cibeles is by entering one of its nearby buildings, which can offer guided tours. Also, some of the most fascinating views of Madrid can only be obtained from the top of the Palacio de Cibeles, so you cannot miss the opportunity to visit it.
If you are lucky, maybe your stay in the Spanish capital coincides with the victory of the local team, then you can join the party in which Plaza Cibeles will always be the most attentive host.
