Green spaces are essential for any city, and in Madrid they know that very well. In the Spanish capital we can find beautiful gardens and extensive recreation areas, but none like the Retiro Park. This is the most important in the whole city and today we are going to discover it.
In the past, the green areas of the city, ideal for relaxing, spending time with friends and having fun, were only available to a few. In the case of El Retiro Park, in its beginnings it was owned by a noble family, and on occasions, it was also visited by the king and his relatives.
When designing the park, the landscaping and distribution of the same was taken into account. Likewise, from its first moments, the managers of the place planted different specimens of trees and flowers, to give it an appearance that is as attractive as it is diverse.
However, this space was affected by the passage of time, and by the different conflicts that the city of Madrid experienced during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Finally, and after it became the property of the state, many resources were invested in recovering the green areas of El Retiro Park, and today it is one of the most beautiful in all of Spain.
El Retiro is not only a place to walk and breathe fresh air in the middle of a big city, but it is also a kind of open-air museum, with various statues, monuments and buildings to see.
Similarly, some of the most valuable attractions in the park are its 5 entrance gates. Each of which has its own design, and most of them have kept many of their original characteristics.
In addition, in the park there are buildings such as the Palacio de Cristal, the Royal Economic Observatory, the Palacio de Velázquez and the Hermitage of San Pelayo and San Isidoro. Along with its buildings, El Retiro Park has beautiful gardens such as La Rosaleda, Bosque del Recuerdo and Paseo de Fernán Núñez.
Likewise, fountains and ponds play a fundamental role in the landscaping of the park. Among the most famous of the place is the Big Pond that accompanies the Monument to Alfonso XII, the Ochavado Pond, the Galápagos Fountain and the Artichoke Fountain.
Without a doubt, in the Retiro Park you will find authentic wonders that will make you completely fall in love with this great city oasis.
This is one of the busiest tourist, cultural and social spots in Madrid, so you can expect a large influx of people in the park. Although in its 118 hectares of space there is room to receive all visitors.
El Retiro Park is also open throughout the year, so you can go to see it during any season. As for the entrance, this is completely free, although to access some interior attractions, such as the boats of the Great Pond, you have to pay an entrance.
Be that as it may, in the Retiro Park you will feel comfortable, with much to see, enjoy and explore. If you are passing through Madrid, come and see its most extraordinary garden.
