Currently, Estonia is growing as a major tourist destination. This small Baltic nation went from being a satellite of the Soviet Union, to becoming one of the most prosperous and advanced countries in the region. If you plan to visit Estonia, you cannot leave Tallinn, its capital, and the iconic Toompea Castle, out of your itinerary.

The fame of Tallinn as a tourist destination of international stature is recent, since until about 20 years ago, very few people were the ones who ventured to this little-known region of Europe.
However, this does not mean that Tallinn‘s history is equally distant, on the contrary, this coastal city has a magnificent cultural legacy, which ranges from art and national literature to architecture.
One of the places that best represents this fantastic wealth and diversity is Toompea Castle. Today, this palace is the seat of the Estonian Parliament, and therefore one of the most important buildings in the entire country.
But that’s not all, Toompea Castle is also one of the oldest, dating from the time when Tallinn was a territory controlled by Denmark. It is said that the first palace that was built on the hill of Toompea was made of wood, which could not withstand wars and the passage of time, so one of stone was built.

The fantastic Toompea Castle continues to dominate the Tallinn skyline, and is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city. In the same way, the long history of this palace seems to have no end, since since the end of the 20th century new spaces have been added and made larger.
One of the most important reforms that took place in Toompea Castle was during the rule of the Russian Empire, giving it a baroque and neoclassical appearance, which harmonized with its original medieval design.
One of the many curiosities of Toompea Castle is that from its top you can see the best panoramic views of the city. In the same way, the tower of the palace stands out, which has been standing since 1360. This tower, called Pikk Hernann, is usually crowned by an up to where the Estonian flag flies.

Toompea Castle, being the seat of political power, is open for most of the year, except for the dates of national celebration and Christmas days.
Likewise, the place offers guided tours for people who want to know all the secrets of the palace. Tours commonly include a walk to Pikk Hernnan, the castle’s main tower and one of the best viewpoints in Tallinn.
In the same way, you should schedule your visit at least 24 hours before going, since this is one of the most frequented tourist places in Estonia. If you can’t wait to visit Toompea Castle, you can book your visit online, so you can save some time and don’t have to stand in long lines to get in.
