In ancient times, Ljubljana, the Slovenian capital, was a simple Roman military post. However, over time this metropolis became one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. In it, we can find several monuments of incalculable historical value, among which is the Robba Fountain.
The history of this fountain begins in the middle of the 18th century, when the local administration decided that the city should have a great artistic work that identifies it, following the example of other capitals such as Rome or Paris.
However, the Ljubljana municipality was small and its resources were limited. Similarly, they could not afford to create a monument that only served a decorative purpose, and was not useful to citizens.
Despite this, the project was carried out and the person in charge of giving life to the Robba Fountain was an Italian sculptor, known as Francesco Robba. This renowned artist was born in Venice, but spent most of his life in Ljubljana.
Likewise, Robba was a great admirer of Bernini’s works, and wanted the Slovenian capital to have a fountain similar to the Fountain of the Four Rivers, located in the mythical Piazza Navona.
In this way, the Robba Fountain was born, which was transferred to the center of Ljubljana in 1751. Since then, it has become one of the most recognizable symbols in the entire country.
This structure is made up of an obelisk, a set of sculptures that surround the pillar and a main fountain. The sculptures represent three men of mythological appearance, very similar to the statues that adorn the Fountain of the Four Rivers.
In the case of the Robba Fountain, these artistic representations personify the three great rivers of Slovenia, the Krka, the Sava and the Ljubljanica. These waterways are part of the country’s natural treasure, and are among the most mentioned elements of Slovenian history.
Similarly, the Robba Fountain stands on a wide base, which is composed of five steps, and is shaped like a decahedron. During its early years, the Robba Fountain also served as a well for running water, where citizens could have access to clean water free of impurities.
Currently, the Robba Fountain does not fulfill this function, but it is still one of the most loved and appreciated monuments by locals, as well as an important tourist attraction.
One of the most interesting peculiarities about the Robba Fountain is that it is one of the most surprising baroque monuments in the entire region, being on a par with other larger monuments, such as the Cathedral of San Nicolás and the Town Hall.
Likewise, these three structures are related to numerical symbolism, since if viewed from the front, the obelisk of the fountain forms a perfect triangle with the two towers of the church.
If you are planning your trip to Ljubljana, take a moment while strolling through the city center, and let yourself be sucked into the incredible mysteries of the Robba Fountain.
