Why was the Philharmonic founded?

Today, Slovenia stands out for its beauty, its incomparable natural wealth and the picturesque charm of its cities. In addition, this corner of Europe stands out for the vibrant local culture, which has enormous literary, architectural and, of course, musical treasures.

However, Slovenians were not always able to enjoy this prosperity. This is because, for many years, Slovenia was a poor and lagging country, in the shadow of Italy, Austria and Croatia, its most important neighbors.

Fortunately, this precarious situation has improved over the centuries. In 1701, Slovenia was already inaugurating its first philharmonic association, and a few years later, the National Philharmonic Association was a recognized institution throughout the country.

These musical academies were the predecessors of the modern Philharmonic, a space where young Slovenians can train to be musicians, participate in orchestras and even present their own compositions.

The peculiar headquarters of the Philharmonic Academy

Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, is a small city, where the buildings are not too tall and the vast majority of the constructions follow a traditional architectural design.

This style of construction can be seen even in its most important buildings, such as the National Library and the City Hall. The Philharmonic house could not be the exception to this rule, and if we see them from the outside, it appears to be an old summer residence, with large windows and arched doors.

However, the interior of the place is a true wonder, since it takes up much more space than meets the eye. In addition, the Philharmonic was designed so that it could fulfill its role as a musical school, so it has a stage for presentations, an extraordinary acoustics and everything an orchestra could need.

Likewise, this conservatory is considered one of the most significant buildings in the city. Not only for its extremely important work to teach and disseminate Slovenian musical culture, but for its curious appearance, which unites a sober exterior with an interior as dynamic as it is fascinating.
