Batlló House is one of the various works by Antoni Gaudí to be found in the city of Barcelona. This is one of the most popular architectural works in the city, and one of the most aesthetically peculiar.
This architectural structure is located on Paseo de Gracía, in Barcelona, and is a neighbor of Amatller House and Casa Lleó Morera. Batlló has the structure of a residential building, and its initial designer was the architect Emilio Sala Cortés.
Later, the building was acquired by Josep Batlló, a wealthy businessman who decided to acquire the building to make it the official home of his family. However, Josep Batlló did not have much regard for the style of the original building, so he hired Gaudí to remodel it.
Antoni Gaudí, who at that time was living his naturalist and modernist stage, accepted the challenge and began the reform that would make the Batlló building one of the most valuable in the Catalan capital.
The redesign works began in 1904, and in 1906 Josep Batlló’s family was able to move into a distinctive new home.
Batlló House is a perfect example of Catalan modernism, with bits of naturalistic and expressionist design that can be appreciated in its flowing lines. Like many of the buildings of the time, it is built with brick and the exterior facades are very colorful and exquisitely decorated. Batlló House has six floors and a basement.
The interiors of the house have beautiful decorative details, like the facade, the lines of the interior design are soft, delicate and flow with the architecture of the house. The six floors of the building have some special detail that makes them unique and valuable.
The light enters freely through its windows, and plays with the colors of the stained glass windows and tiles. Balconies, gardens, domes, vaults, murals and pillars complement the interior spaces of Batlló House.
The property belonged to the Josep Batlló family until 1954, then it became the property of Seguros Iberia, which installed its offices there, and later passed into the hands of the Bernat family, who made it a place accessible to the public and dedicated to lovers of the work of Antoni Gaudí.
It is currently a National Historical-Aristic Monument, in addition to being a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This residential monument is a highly sought after Barcelona tourist spot, one of the most popular in the city. Every year it receives many visitors, and its worldwide fame grows every day, especially among fans of Catalan architecture and modernism.
If you plan to visit Batlló House, you should plan your visit, especially if you go during the high season. The lines to get in are usually long, but the wait is definitely worth it. The Batlló House has guided tours, and you can visit the six floors of the structure, plus the basement, the balconies and the fantastic roof terrace.
Although the tours are only during the day, the administration of Batlló House is in the process of enabling night-time walks through the residence.
