Fjords, forests, mountains, lakes and rivers are part of the typical Scottish landscape. However, the country’s river roads can limit the passage of railways and the transport of goods. For this reason, the Forth Bridge was created, one of the most famous structures in the Scotland.
The River Forth is one of many that runs through Scotland and empties into the icy waters of the North Sea. For centuries, the inhabitants of the area took advantage of the river’s route to make trips and move material goods from one city to another.
Despite this, navigation on the River Forth was dangerous. The boats that passed through it ran the risk of being trapped in the middle of a storm, shipwrecked due to the raging waters and even being attacked by pirates.
For all these reasons, the Forth was an adventure reserved only for the bravest. The river had a single footbridge, a precursor to the modern Forth Bridge, located near the city of Stirling. This town, along with its bridge, starred in one of the most notorious battles in Scotland.
There they battled the troops of the legendary Scottish soldier, William Wallace, against the incoming forces, who tried to take over the country. In time, Scotland became part of the United Kingdom, but its relationship with the River Forth was far from over.
One of the most remarkable characteristics of the River Forth is that it is the natural border that separates the southwest of Scotland with the northwest of the territory. This made it necessary to create a bridge strong and resistant enough to withstand the passage of time and adverse weather conditions.
Finally, this project was approved by the British Parliament, and the construction of the Forth Bridge began in 1873. This would be inaugurated in 1890, becoming one of the largest and most important bridges in Europe.
Similarly, it should be noted that the Forth Bridge is not made for vehicular traffic, but for rail transit. Likewise, the structure stands out for the incredible quality of its materials, and it is easy to see it thanks to its 46 meters high and 2.5 kilometers long.
Today, the Forth Bridge remains one of Scotland’s busiest thoroughfares, as well as one of its busiest shopping spots.
The huge Forth Bridge can be seen from the north of Edinburgh, and it is common to hear the passage of the railways that make use of its main line. If you wish, you can go up to the bank of the Forth and take some pictures.
The bridge facilities are not open to tourists, as the structure is strictly professional and only allows rail passage. But don’t be discouraged! Near the Forth Bridge there are other smaller footbridges, which are the Firth of Forth and the Forth Road Bridge.
Both are walkable and open to pedestrian crossing, although the most fun way to cross the river and feel like you’re crossing the Forth Bridge is riding a bike from one end of the walkway to the other.
