Florence is the capital city of one of the most famous regions in Italy, Tuscany, and as you might expect, the place exudes an air of romance that can be seen everywhere. From the houses to the old palaces, passing through the iconic Ponte Vecchio, in Florence even the simplest is art.
The history of the Ponte Vecchio seems to be as extensive as that of the city itself. According to official records, the first bridge built over the narrowest part of the Arno River was the work of the Romans when the city was founded.
This first bridge, made of wood, resisted for a long time, until it finally fell victim to the floods, the flooding of the river and the wear of its materials.
In the place of the old bridge, another would rise, which would become a true emblem for all Florentines. The Ponte Vecchio that currently stands does not have a specific inauguration date, although its construction is presumed to have ended in 1345.
The bridge that can be seen over the Arno is made entirely of stone, and from the beginning it was an important regional trade point.
The Ponte Vecchio is an arched bridge, measuring 67 meters long and 32 meters wide. One of its most representative and popular characteristics is that it is one of the very few inhabited bridges that are preserved in Europe.
For many centuries, its hanging houses were home to many jewelers, goldsmiths, merchants, butchers and other merchants. This bridge was one of the best places in the city to buy jewelery, and many of Italy’s most famous goldsmiths, such as Benvenuto Cellini, are celebrated and remembered in the bridge squares.
In addition, the Ponte Vecchio is a popular place among lovers, since couples from all over Italy and the world go there to leave a lock with their names, a sign of their love.
Similarly, the sunsets over the Vecchio are incredibly beautiful, as you can see the silhouette of the city and the reflection of the sun in the waters of the Arno River.
Due to its history and its fame, the Ponte Vecchio is extremely popular with Florentines and with the millions of people who travel to the city each year. So if a little extra company doesn’t bother you, you’ll love taking a walk along the old cobbled pathways of the bridge.
If you are a lover of history, art and culture, Florence is the ideal city for you. Walking its streets is a wonderful experience, and of course, you cannot miss a place as special as the Ponte Vecchio.
In the same way, keep in mind that the entrance to the bridge is completely free, and that you can stay there as long as you want. It is also a very busy area, so it is perfect for meeting new people and immersing yourself in the everyday life of the Florentines.
If you want a unique view of the bridge, you can book a barge ride, from where you will see the picturesque houses and imposing arches of the Ponte Vecchio. And you, what are you waiting to meet him?
