What is the history of the Signoria Square?

Florence, the capital of the Tuscany region and one of the most populated cities in northern Italy, is very old. It was founded by the Romans, when they began to expand their territory throughout the rest of the peninsula.

The Signoria Square began to develop, officially, in the year 1268. Previously, it was a commercial point, where there were small houses and residential apartments. Although it was commercially active, the place did not have a good reputation, and it was associated with the poorer classes of the city.

This changed when buildings of political power began to be installed near the Plaza de la Señora. Likewise, the creation of the Ponte Vecchio, the Pallazzo de la Signora and the Palazzo Vecchio gave a new look to the square, which became the center of political and social life for all Florentines.

The square, an open-air museum

Although Signoria Square is not, nor does it have, the name of a museum, the truth is that its artistic, cultural and historical heritage is incalculable.

First of all, we can mention the hundreds of curious events that have occurred there. During medieval times, the square was where heretics were burned at the stake, and where the people got rid of objects disapproved of by the church, such as books and other similar belongings. These acts can be seen commemorated by plaques, located around the square.

Similarly, the Signoria Square is decorated by different statues, many of them the works of great artists, such as Donatello and Benvenuto Cellini. Furthermore, this was the original exhibition site for Michelangelo’s David, before it was transferred to the Accademia Gallery.

In the center you can see its famous fountain, with the sculpture of Neptune representing the maritime power of the city of Florence.

Nor can we stop talking about the Pallazzo Vecchio, seat of the Florence City Council, or the great statue of Cosimo I de Medici, one of the precursors of the commercial growth of the city.
