Markets are a symbol of identity for any city, and Ljubljana, the Slovenian capital, is no exception to this rule. So if you go for a walk through this beautiful Balkan metropolis, take the opportunity to discover all the wonders that the Central Market has for you.
Ljubljana is a traditional city, many of its buildings are old, and its classic style makes it a picturesque and fascinating town. Likewise, the cultural tradition of Slovenia is still very present in the daily lives of its citizens.
However, Ljubljana has also undergone great periods of change, which have transformed various parts of the city. In fact, its Central Market inherited a historical area, which was previously occupied by another building.
In this case, the old construction was a monastery, which also functioned as a school for girls. Unfortunately, this temple was de stroyed by a great earthquake, and its structure could not be recovered.
Despite this, the local administration could not leave this space empty, so the rubble was removed, and the construction of the Central Market began. This commercial point was inaugurated in 1942, being the work of the famous Slovenian architect, Jože Plečnik.
This dynamic space is characterized by being an open-air market, within which there is a wide variety of stalls and shops. They offer many types of products, but the most popular are vegetables, fruits and legumes.
In the same way, all these foods stand out for their quality, freshness and vibrant colors. Many are produced in the agricultural regions of Slovenia, and are moved to the capital shortly after being harvested. However, several types of tropical fruits can also be found here, including watermelons, bananas, papayas, mangoes, and pineapples.
In addition, in the Central Market it is also possible to find a wide variety of typical food, which is sold already prepared and can be consumed in the same place. If you are looking for a gastronomic option that allows you to enjoy the most traditional dishes of Ljubljana, this market is the ideal alternative.
Also, other types of products are sold here, such as flowers, gardening materials and even some crafts and souvenir items. Similarly, the Central Market is one of the most frequented places by locals when shopping, while travelers enjoy its charming corridors, peaceful atmosphere and many offers.
The Central Market is open from Monday to Saturday, and it is not necessary to buy a ticket to enter its facilities. Regarding the season, any time is good to visit the great market in Ljubljana, but the splendor of the spring months and the Christmas period are the ones that attract the most tourists.
However, it must be taken into account that the Central Market hours during winter are different from those of the rest of the year. Therefore, we recommend that you carefully plan your itinerary, if you plan to travel during this season.
Finally, it only remains to enjoy the great experience of visiting the Central Market, be sure that you will be fascinated.
