In Ljubljana, the capital and most populous city of Slovenia, we find a great variety of buildings, houses, cathedrals and monuments that preserve their medieval style. Among the most picturesque buildings in the metropolis, is the Cobbler’s Bridge, which has become a Slovenian icon, and also one of its most visited tourist spots.
Like other European cities, Ljubljana grew up next to a river. For several centuries, this waterway was very important for local commerce, in addition to supplying water to the inhabitants of the area.
However, for the Slovenian capital to continue growing, it was necessary to unite both parts of the city, which were separated by the Ljubljana river. The first bridges that crossed river waters were precarious structures, made of wood, so storms and earthquakes could easily destroy them.
However, the Slovenian government kept trying to build a bridge that was strong enough to withstand any difficulty, but also harmonized with the rest of the structures in the city.
In this way, Cobbler’s Bridge was born, which was inaugurated in 1931. Stone and steel were used in its construction, making it a solid and strong passageway, capable of overcoming adversity.
At first glance, there is nothing on the bridge that alludes to shoemakers, but this nice name is an inheritance that history has left to the catwalk. Of course, the modern Cobbler’s Bridge hasn’t been standing since medieval times, yet the location remains exactly the same.
For this reason, the new structure continues to be related to the characteristics that most identified its predecessors. The name is one of them, since many centuries ago, this bridge was the headquarters of the Ljubljana butchers.
Despite this, the meats sold there were often damaged, especially during the hottest months of the year. This caused a terrible odor, which even bothered the nobles and kings of the city.
To remedy this situation, the Ljubljana administration relocated the butchers, while the bridge space was taken over by shoemakers. The relationship between the catwalk and the shoemakers ‘trade became a tradition, and since then, this has been Cobbler’s Bridge.
The Slovenian capital is so beautiful that it seems out of a fairy tale, its picturesque beauty is present in every corner and all who visit it are impressed by its historic center, famous for its impeccable state of preservation.
However, it is impossible to get to know Ljubljana without having walked across the Cobbler’s Bridge. This is one of the pedestrian paths most used by locals, so if you want to see the daily life of the city up close, this is the perfect spot.
In addition, Cobbler’s Bridge offers beautiful views of both sides of the river, ideal to enjoy the sunset and let yourself be caught by the spell of this special metropolis.
