In the center of the city of Madrid, we find its most emblematic church, the Almudena Cathedral. Which is closely related to the Royal Family of Spain, in addition to being the seat of the diocese of Madrid, making the cathedral one of the most important temples in the entire country.
The construction of the Almudena Cathedral began with the approval of the project by the then king, Alfonso XII, and his wife, Queen María de las Mercedes. The sovereign, known for her Catholic devotion, wanted Madrid to have a great cathedral, and that it be dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
However, the church took a long time to finish, since its construction began in 1883 and was completed in 1993, a century after the construction work began.
This delay in its inauguration, made the Almudena Cathedral become one of the newest in Spain, in contrast to other religious buildings, which are hundreds of years old.
Currently, the Almudena Cathedral, whose official name is Santa Iglesia Catedral Metropolitana de Santa María de la Real de Almudena, has the recognition of being the seat of the archbishopric and the archdiocese of Madrid.
This cathedral has a neo-romantic, neo-classical and neo-Gothic design style. The variations in its architecture are due, in part, to the fact that it had to go through the hands of different master builders, each with a different vision of how the cathedral should look.
Today, the Almudena Cathedral has two main facades, a dome, a central nave, two towers and large stained glass windows. The dome is especially fascinating, notable for its large size and for its intricate neo-Gothic model.
Likewise, the ship stands out for its height, since it reaches 82 meters. In addition, we could not fail to mention the beautiful stained glass windows of the church, these are wide enough so that the interior can receive natural light.
The colors of the stained glass windows give much to talk about, since with the correct lighting, they give the illusion that they paint the spaces of the cathedral. Likewise, art is not lacking in Almudena, as it is full of religious-themed sculptures, drawings, mosaics and murals.
All these wonders, added to its proximity to the Royal Palace, led to the Almudena Cathedral being chosen to celebrate the wedding of Felipe and Letizia, current kings of Spain.
If you are going to pass through Madrid, and you want to see its most important church, then you have to go to the Almudena Cathedral. This is free entry, although to enter you must make a donation of € 1, which is deposited at the entrance of the temple.
In the same way, inside the cathedral you will find the Almudena Museum, dedicated to the history and works of art found inside the temple. Taking a tour of the museum, you can climb up to the dome, to appreciate it more closely.
Dare to explore one of the most characteristic buildings in Madrid, we are waiting for you at the Almudena Cathedral.
