The city of Marrakech, one of the most impressive in Morocco, is steeped in history and incredible architectural sites, reflecting the extensive cultural heritage of the region. The history of the El Badi Palace begins in Portugal, when the young king, Sebastián I, assumed the mandate of the Portuguese nation. This happened in the 16th century, when the memory of the Crusades was still present in different European nations.
Sebastián I was a devout Catholic, and he was against the expansion of Islam, which had already conquered part of the Iberian Peninsula on different occasions. Furthermore, at that time, Portugal was one of the most powerful colonial powers, and its influence ranged from the coasts of Africa to the jungles of Brazil.
However, this conquering force was not enough to subdue the nascent kingdom of Morocco, since in the final battle, King Sebastian I perished along with two local monarchs, heirs of the Sultan.
To commemorate the battle, and honor the memory of the local princes, the El Badi Palace was built in Marrakech, which was the most splendid of all Moroccan castles.
Today, Marrakech is still a beautiful city, but its old palace no longer exists. In its place are the archaeological ruins of the structure, which mark the site where this very important castle previously stood.
The decline of the El Badi Palace was no coincidence, since for many years, the capital of Morocco was Marrakech. However, when this center of power was transferred to another locality, the constructions of the old main city suffered the consequences.
However, the memory of a glorious palace is still present in the collective memory of Marrakech. El Badi is said to have been so luxurious that it had over 300 rooms and was delicately decorated with the most glittering jewels and gems, including sapphires, rubies, emeralds and turquoise. Also, gold details were present throughout the palace, making it a true treasure.
Fortunately, the foundations, the courtyard and several of the walls of the El Badi Palace still exist, and are open to foreign tourists. If archeology is your thing, you love discovering interesting things and you love learning more about the history of the cities you visit, then the most famous castle in Marrakech is just what you were looking for.
Visits to the El Badi Palace are free, but the best option is to choose the guided tours, as the castle ruins can be a bit confusing, especially if you are visiting the place for the first time.
Likewise, a guide can take you to the most interesting points of El Badi, such as the old dungeons of the palace and the original pulpit of the Koutobia Mosque. Finally, remember that in order to enter the ruins of El Badi Palace, you must purchase a ticket.
