The city of Minsk, capital of Belarus, is a mysterious, enigmatic metropolis full of places to discover. This is one of the oldest cities in Europe, and it keeps a great cultural heritage, which represents the courage of its inhabitants. The history of Minsk begins with the first settlements in this area of Europe, which have been standing for centuries. However, the Belarusian capital has also witnessed terrible wars and cruel regimes, so it had to start from scratch on several occasions.
One of his most tragic moments was during World War II. Buildings, monuments, and other historical sites in Minsk, especially those dating from medieval times, were destroyed.
Similarly, several areas of the city had to be rebuilt, and today they have a completely different appearance than they did at the beginning of the 20th century.
Despite this, a few buildings managed to withstand the worst days of the war, and today they are a treasure for the inhabitants of the city. Among them is the Minsk Cathedral, the most important in the capital as well as one of the most visited tourist spots in Belarus.
Belarus, like all other nations that were part of the Soviet Union, had a strict policy against cathedrals, churches, and other religious sites.
For this reason, the Minsk Cathedral remained closed for several years. In the same way, it had already gone through very complex times, because the religious changes that occurred in the country had made it go from being a Catholic church to an Orthodox temple.
Finally, the ban on religious spaces was lifted in 1993, when the Minsk Cathedral was returned to Catholics. Then came an extensive period of renovations to restore the cathedral’s former glory, which reopened in 1997.
Likewise, the Minsk Cathedral is still located in its original place in the city center, surrounded by beautiful gardens and protected by a fence designed in the 18th century.
