In Austria, it is easy to find wonderful castles, full of treasures and a huge cultural heritage. One of the most notorious is the Schönbrunn Palace, which was one of the royal residences most used by the imperial family. Today, it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Vienna, as well as one of the best-known palaces in Europe.
Few royal residences, even today, can compare to the Palace of Versailles, the immense and majestic castle that was home to countless French kings. However, there are some that are on the same level, and among them is the Schönbrunn Palace.
This royal residence dates from the year 1559, when it was only a summer house with large spaces dedicated to hunting and recreation. Nothing remains of this original palace today, as it was destroyed in one of the many wars Austria was a part of.
Schönbrunn Palace was used by different members of the Austrian royalty over the centuries, but it was not widely recognized nor was it a favorite of the court. This changed with the arrival of the Empress Maria Teresa to power, since it was she who gave this magnificent residence splendor.
Schönbrunn Palace would continue to be owned by the imperial family until the fall of Austria-Hungary, which occurred at the end of the First World War.
Today, the famous Schönbrunn Palace remains one of the most representative buildings in the Austrian capital. In the same way, it is also a museum where the life of the emperors is shown and what the original decoration of the time was like, which stands out for its rococo style.
Likewise, the Schönbrunn Palace is made up of different areas, linked by an immense garden. This expansion of green spaces makes this castle a large park that adorns the Austrian capital.
In the same way, tourist visits to the Schönbrunn Palace are usually divided between the many sections that make it up. These are the Main Building, the Glorieta, the Entrance, the Roman Ruins and the Gardens.
Interestingly, Schönbrunn Palace is also a close neighbor of Tiergarten Zoo, the oldest in the world. Without a doubt, this mythical castle is as special as it is unique, qualities that made it a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Being such an important tourist spot, there are different ways to get to Schönbrunn Palace. Among tourists, the most used option is the U4 line of the Vienna metro, which has a station that is quite close to the Schönbrunn Palace.
If you need other alternatives, you can use the tram or board the bus line, both also have stations near this famous Viennese castle, as well as being very safe and accessible.
Remember that, once at the Schönbrunn Palace, you must buy a ticket to access. After your castle tour is over, don’t hesitate to visit other Vienna must-sees, such as the Natural History Museum and the Staatsoper.
