A new look for 20th century Vienna

Austria had a turbulent history throughout the 20th century, going from being an empire to becoming an annexed state of Nazi Germany, while enduring the terrible battles of the First and Second World Wars.

As the worst events were in the past, Austria, and especially Vienna, its capital, opened up to modernity. It came in the form of riskier fashions, musical genres that had never been heard in the region, liberal art, and an architectural variety that broke paradigms.

One of the greatest examples of this modernist advance is in the Hundertwasserhaus residence. This was built between 1983 and 1987, being the work of the renowned Austrian architect, Friendensreich Hundertwasser.

The Hundertwasserhaus was so revolutionary in its day that it quickly became one of the most visited tourist attractions in Vienna. This is known for its vibrant hues, its wavy floors, its small windows and the incredible colors that adorn its facade.

What to visit in Vienna

What to see and do at the Hundertwasserhaus?

This great Viennese house is commonly compared to the different buildings created by the Spanish architect, Antoni Gaudí. It is not an error to say that these similarities are true, since the Hundertwasserhaus residence is closely related to the different architectural currents promoted by Gaudí, such as naturalism and modernism.

Indeed, those who go to the Hundertwasserhaus can stop to admire the curious disparity of colors and designs that makes the building so popular. However, in the vast majority of cases, it is only possible to see it from the outside, since the apartments that are inside the property are private spaces.

But do not worry! The peculiar appearance of the Hundertwasserhaus is so well known that right next to it you can find a shopping center bearing the same name. This is open to the public, and its interior is very similar to that of the Hundertwasserhaus, including the corrugated floors, the small windows and the trees that grow inside the structure.

Likewise, in the vicinity of the shopping center is also located the Hundertwasser Museum, dedicated to the life and work of this innovative architect.
