This coastal town was first populated over a thousand years ago. During its entire time, Zadar has been a Greek, Roman, Dalmatic, Yugoslav and finally Croatian city. In fact, much of Zadar’s tourist attraction lies in its undeniable cultural and historical heritage, rather than its beaches, restaurants or nightlife.
Urbanistically, Zadar stands out for its beautiful cobbled streets, its medieval walls and its many monuments in Gothic and Baroque style, dating from the Renaissance era. This city has the luxury of having an almost intact old town, which coexists with the modernity of its inhabitants.
One of Zadar’s must-see tourist attractions is the Sea Organ, a musical instrument made up of pipes that sound with the wind in step with the waves, and which is located just below some marble steps that connect directly with the sea.
Another attraction of the city is the Salute to the Sun, a glass panel that absorbs light during the day, and at night glows with various colors, thus illuminating the Zadar coastline.
In addition, we can also go to the local market, where a wide variety of vegetables, fruits and cheeses is offered. Likewise, in the Town square it is possible to admire buildings such as the Clock Tower and the town hall.
It is also possible to tour the Roman Forum of Zadar, a monument built when Dalmatia was a province of the Roman Empire. This forum houses other smaller buildings, but just as interesting, such as a small chapel built in the 9th century, whose original structure remains practically unaltered.
On the other hand, the Church of Santa Maria, the Cathedral of San Donato and the Archaeological Museum of Zadar, are also points of tourist interest, which are worth a visit. Even if you want to get away from the city a bit, you can visit Paklenica National Park, which is about 40 minutes away.
When you visit this city on the Croatian coast, you should consider that it is not a very extensive place, and that you will most likely be able to visit it in its entirety in less than three days. Although Zadar is one of the strong points of tourism in Croatia, it would be ideal to complement it by visiting some other city in the region, such as Split or Zagreb, the capital of the country.
On the other hand, the fame of the city as an important tourist destination is something recent, so do not be surprised if some of its inhabitants do not treat tourists with enough delicacy. It is normal that the local population is getting used to seeing large groups of tourists in their city.
However, don’t let this put you off, and enjoy your stay in Zadar as much as possible. It may be a small place, but its beautiful architecture, gorgeous cathedrals, excellent cuisine, and unforgettable sunsets will make up for it.
