In Zurich, we can find all kinds of modern buildings, innovative cultural offerings and world-class technology, but if you want to know the past of the city, then you have to look back and focus on its legendary monuments. One of the places that protects Zurich’s heritage is the Fraumunster church, and here we are going to discover its secrets.
In medieval Europe, the church and the state were the same. One directly influences the other, and between them they protected their beliefs, ideals and interests. Therefore, it is not surprising that many of the most famous European abbeys have been created for the aristocracy.
These types of religious convents were of great importance throughout the region, including Switzerland. Because of this, an abbey was built in Zurich, intended to house the daughter of Louis the Germanic, an heir to the Emperor Charlemagne. The construction of this temple was completed in the middle of the 9th century.
Luis el Germánico wanted this abbey to be only for nuns, so it was named as Fraumunster, which in Spanish means “Ministry of Women”.
The support for this convent was not wise when Luis el Germanico left power, on the contrary, he continued to enjoy all the privileges of the crown.
Today, Fraumunster is one of the most popular and visited churches in Zurich. It is also among the most important tourist attractions in the city. It stands out thanks to its green dome, its colorful stained glass windows and its fantastic clock.
However, the modern Fraumunster is only a small part of what was the original abbey, which was dissolved in the 16th century. Similarly, the church had to adapt to the Protestant Reformation, which spread rapidly in the Germanic countries.
During the same reform period, the Fraumunster church was looted on several occasions, and many of its medieval treasures were lost forever. For a long time, the interior of the temple did not have any adornment, since the reformers considered that the decorations had no place in the religious headquarters.
Fortunately, the reform laws were relaxed over the years, and the Fraumunster received a new decoration, which included more striking colors and stained glass with delicate designs. Despite this, the structure suffered over the centuries, which made it fragile and vulnerable.
If you visit the Fraumunster, you will come across a small but incredibly beautiful church, where Gothic architecture mixes with romantic design, and in between is the history of Zurich.
Discovering Zurich is easier than you think, as the city has excellent public transport. So if you want to see the Fraumunster church, all you have to do is take the local tram, which will take you to Münsterhof street, where the old abbey is located.
Finally, you must bear in mind that in order to enter the Fraumunster church, you must buy a ticket. Do not forget that students and young people under 16 years of age enter for free.
