Museums and cultural houses are spaces dedicated to the care and preservation of history, arts and traditions. In Switzerland, we find a wide variety of museums, dedicated to all kinds of topics. However, it is the National Museum where we can learn about all the secrets, curiosities, peculiarities and experiences of this magnificent nation.
One of the qualities that most identifies Switzerland is its extensive line of railways, whose main headquarters is the Central Station. Opposite this passenger terminal is one of Zurich’s most iconic buildings, the Landesmuseum.
This site, which houses the National Museum, is one of the most popular in the country, both for its architecture and for its great cultural treasure. The history of the Landesmuseum began at the end of the 19th century, when the city of Zurich was beginning to modernize.
Likewise, the headquarters of the National Museum was built exclusively to receive its collections and exhibitions. Which was quite a rarity, since most museums went from being private residences to public spaces.
But that’s not all, the Landesmuseum fulfilled a political mission at that time, since its inauguration was due to the celebration of 50 years of the Federal Constitution of Switzerland.
Similarly, the design of the Landesmuseum is fascinating, as it combines elements of medieval architecture and typical German buildings, creating a building that reflects the long history of the Swiss.
Currently, the Landesmuseum is divided into several different spaces. Each of which has its own themes and presentation rooms. Among the most popular exhibits are the Hall of Fame, the Neo-Gothic gallery and the room dedicated to the medieval history of Switzerland.
It should be noted that the National Museum is not only limited to showing pieces of the Swiss past, but also has a diverse range of historical pieces, corresponding to all the social strata and cultural groups that created the Swiss Confederation.
Therefore, we find from the simplest everyday utensils, such as combs, clothes, shoes, mirrors and cutlery, to jewelry and eccentricities that belonged to the aristocracy.
Some of these exhibits are interactive, which is why the National Museum is popular with families and groups on field trips. Thanks to its prestige and cultural relevance, the Landesmuseum also hosts numerous conferences, interviews, meetings, debates and workshops.
Because it is such an important institution, the National Museum is open throughout the year. However, the best time to visit it is during the summer months, when there are many more activities available.
Also, if you already plan to visit the Landesmuseum, you should know that the tour can last up to two hours, so it is advisable that you plan your itinerary properly. Guided tours are also available, and are offered in English, Italian, German, and Spanish.
Finally, the National Museum of Zurich has a virtual application, which can guide you digitally as you walk through its facilities. This application can be used on smartphones, or on devices that are delivered by the museum itself.
