The origins and history of the Ciutadella Park

The Ciutadella Park was designed and inaugurated in 1881, being the creation of the Catalan master builder, José Fontseré y Mestre. Fontseré took as inspiration the well-known Luxembourg Garden, symbol of the city of Paris.

In 1888, it was the main venue for the Universal Exhibition of Barcelona, which gave it international fame and recognition. Currently the Ciutadella Park houses various buildings, among which is the Parliament of Catalonia and the Barcelona Zoo.

Its spaces also house numerous works of art, making it the most important open-air museum in the entire city. Like almost all parks, it has fountains, ponds, green areas, and recreation spaces.
