The capital city of the federal state of Bavaria, it is an ancient metropolis, and many of its urban constructions date back many centuries. However, that does not mean that Munich has not modernized over time, with Odeonsplatz being one of its most important urban reforms.
Plans to build the Odeonsplatz square began in the mid-17th century, when Munich was staring into the future, leaving behind the old medieval buildings. Among the various urban modernization plans, it was planned to demolish the walls that protected the city.
By removing these walls, the entrance to Munich was completely free, so a new place had to be created that would welcome travelers who came to the city. Thus was born the Odeonsplatz square, currently one of the most visited and busiest in Munich.
Furthermore, Odeonsplatz has witnessed countless conflicts and political changes that have affected the entire Bavarian region. For this reason, one of its most outstanding monuments is the obelisk in the square, which was erected to honor the Bavarian army.
Similarly, Odeonsplatz serves as a connection between the imposing Residenz Castle and the gorgeous Nymphemburg Palace.
This place of public recreation has a rectangular shape, and is surrounded by different buildings and spaces of great cultural importance. These include the Feldherrnhalle, also known as the Marshal’s Hall, the Hofgarten garden and the famous Church of the Theatines.
This church is one of Munich’s main attractions, thanks to its yellow Rococo-style facade. In addition, this religious temple forms a division between the square and its nearby streets.
All these features make Odensplatz a haven of tranquility in the middle of a large and bustling city. There visitors can go for a walk, ride a bike, sit down to rest, take pictures, meet up with friends or just have a good time in one of the most iconic places in Munich.
But this is not all, as Odensplatz has a very important meaning for the citizens of the Bavarian capital. An extensive variety of festivals, musical events, political rallies, social protests, sports celebrations and even notorious cultural celebrations such as the well-known Oktoberfest are held in this square.
