Germany is home to fantastic castles, majestic gardens, and fascinating museums, yet there is one place that has all of these wonders within its grounds. We are talking about the Residenz, the most important palace in all of Bavaria, as well as one of its most emblematic buildings.
The region of Bavaria, which is currently a German federal state, has undergone various changes throughout its history. It has been a monarchy, a duchy, and even an independent state. However, the period that most characterizes Bavaria was its kingdom time, when the Wittelsbach family ruled.
The Wittelsbachs settled in old Munich, and there they built a palace, which would be both their seat of government and their royal residence. This palace was the Residenz, also known as The Residence.
The walls of the Residenz preserve centuries of Bavarian history, and inside we can appreciate what daily life was like, the decorative tastes and home planning of the generations of dukes, kings, queens, princes and princesses that inhabited it.
The first vestiges of the Residenz appeared in 1385, when it looked more like a large house than a real castle. Over the centuries, the palace expanded, and its importance as a center of political power increased.
The Residenz would be a home for the local nobility until 1918, when the German monarchical system fell. Today, it is a museum.
One of the greatest characteristics of this castle was its construction method. It was growing and expanding for centuries, so it cannot be said that it was officially finished until the early 20th century.
This makes the Residenz a completely unique place, as countless years of Bavarian development are mixed in it. Likewise, almost all its owners added something different to it, and it is for this reason that the castle has 130 rooms, a royal hall, a greenhouse, an antique dealer, a theater, more than 5 entrances, 10 gardens and innumerable corridors.
Fortunately, much of its original decoration remains almost intact, so its historical and cultural value is of utmost importance not only for Bavaria, but for all of Germany.

The Residenz Palace is open all year round, but its hours change, especially between the high and low tourist seasons. Despite this, the cost of entry is always the same.
