Like other European capitals, Athens has its own operatic theater, which is known as the National Opera of Greece and is one of the most modern cultural houses in the country. Today, this is one of the most visited Athenian tourist attractions, and it should definitely be on your must-see list.
In the 19th century, Greece did not have a large opera house. Instead, the functions and shows were presented in a small Athenian theater, which was far removed from the magnificent opera houses of other cities such as Vienna or Paris.
However, Greek opera artists were known in the region, as they toured nearby countries such as Turkey, Romania, and even Egypt. Likewise, the old Greek theater company came to appear in the United States, driven by the huge Greek diaspora in that country.
Over time, the Helena administration recognized the incredible talent of its opera groups, and began a funding process so that it could grow and continue to perform internationally.
Today, this drive to the arts and theater still continues, as the new headquarters of the Greek National Opera opened its doors in 2016, being part of the cultural complex built by the foundation of the great shipping magnate, Stavros Niarchos. .
Generally, opera houses are buildings of classical style and stately appearance. This is not the case with the Greek National Opera, its headquarters is one of the most modern in the world, and its architectural design is as avant-garde as it is innovative.
Likewise, the construction of this cultural center was a private initiative, later being donated to the Greek State. Similarly, the site designers ensured that the venue had enough space not only to house the opera company, but also for rehearsals to take place and training for future members of the theater organization.
In the same way, this cultural house has its own bookstore, recreation spaces, areas dedicated to the study of the arts and a wide range of entertainment that adapts to all tastes.
Please note that although many of the main performances take place on the main venue stage, on special occasions the company also performs at the legendary Odeon Theater of Herodes Atticus, located on the Acropolis.
The theater has had an important role in Greek culture since classical times, so you cannot take a walk through one of the most prominent European metropolises without visiting its National Opera.
Likewise, you can take the opportunity to visit the impressive cultural palace of Stavros Niarchos, which has become one of the most popular buildings in Athens.
If you do not want to miss this opportunity, check the billboard of the National Opera of Greece, which is active for most of the year. Rest assured that you will find a performance that you love and that allows you to get a little closer to the wonderful world of Greek theater.
