Many European capitals stand out for their ancient charm, and Athens is no exception. There we can find one of the most vibrant, colorful and beautiful neighborhoods in the entire Mediterranean, the Plaka neighborhood. Today, this is the most visited in the city, and one of the many must-sees of any trip to Athens.
The famous Acropolis of Athens is the highest area of the city, and where the ruins of one of the oldest and most famous temples in all of Greece remain. However, the temple is not the only attraction of the place, since on one of the slopes of the hill is the Plaka neighborhood.
This is a historic neighborhood, which was born from the remains of the ancient agora of Athens. Since then, Plaka has been home to countless generations of Athenian citizens, as well as the neighborhood where Turkish governors and diplomats settled during the time of the Ottoman Empire. Do not forget that for more than 350 years it was a Turkish settlement, like all of Athens.
Throughout its long history, Plaka has been uninhabited only once and it was due to the Greek War of Independence, as the battles that were fought all around the Acropolis were as terrible as they were destructive.
Despite this, the Plaka neighborhood endured all adversities, and today it is a picturesque, beautiful place that is highly visited by locals and tourists.
Plaka is known for its small, narrow cobbled streets, as well as for its flowers, houses and gardens. In addition, gastronomy has become a regular activity in the place, which is also full of restaurants, taverns and cafes where you can try authentic Athenian food.
Similarly, the Plaka Quarter is a transit area, as it is very close to other popular tourist attractions in the city, such as the Monastiraki and Anafiotika neighborhoods.
Likewise, the places of cultural interest represent one of the many charms of the Plaka neighborhood. Due to its location, it is the ideal area to start a walk towards the Acropolis Temple, Acropolis Museum or towards the Roman Agora.
In addition, within the neighborhood there are cultural centers such as the Museum of the University of Athens, the Museum of Popular Instruments, the Jewish Museum of Greece, the Frissiras Museum and the Museum of Greek Folk Art.
Despite its immense tourist popularity, the Plaka Quarter retains a wonderful historical authenticity. Seen from afar, Plaka has the appearance of a Mediterranean seaside town, rather than a famous neighborhood located in the center of a large city.
It is also an area full of cultural treasures, where you can find vestiges of its past while walking through its streets. Of course, we cannot fail to mention its enormous variety and gastronomic richness.
But if all that still does not convince you, you should know that in Plaka you will find wonderful souvenir shops and typical sweets, which you will not find in any other part of Athens. So if you are looking for that ideal souvenir item, without a doubt, you have to come to this neighborhood.
Do not wait more! Come to the Plaka neighborhood, and fall in love with one of the most fantastic places that Athens has to offer.
