Athens is an impressive city in every way. One of those that surprise you with an ancient archaeological site in the middle of a modern street. One of the wonders that it offers to visitors is the Temple of Olympian Zeus, also known as Olymppeion.
During a trip to Athens it is impossible not to spend some time visiting its impressive historical monuments, which are living remnants of the legacy that Hellenic civilization has left to the Western world.
Surely you have ever heard or read about Zeus, the most important god in Greek mythology, and in the Olymppeion or Temple of Olympian Zeus, you will find an impressive architectural work erected between the 6th centuries BC. and II AD, which witnessed the classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods of the city of Athens.
Its huge and overwhelming columns 17 meters high, made this temple the largest in Greece at the time, until apparently due to an earthquake in the Middle Ages, its structure was seriously affected, which, added to the passage of centuries, led it to its present state of partial destruction.
The Olimpeion is located just 500 meters from the Acropolis, another monumental space that symbolizes the great Athens. It is even possible to get spectacular views of the Temple of Olympian Zeus from the mountain topped by the Acropolis, which provides a magnificent setting for taking some dreamy photos.
Likewise, this temple is located less than a kilometer from the emblematic Syntagma Square, and just over a kilometer and a half from the dynamic and popular Monastiraki sector, two urban icons of Athens that every visitor should know.
In both areas we will be able to find a great variety of cafes, restaurants and shops that will make our journey to the monument much more pleasant, as well as allowing us to know features of the Athenian identity.
In that sense, and if you have enough energy, you can easily walk from one of these points to the Olimpeion. It is also possible to take a taxi to take you to its surroundings, or take advantage of one of the Athens metro stations that surround the area.
Although much of the original Olimpeion was destroyed, and many of its pieces were stolen over time, it is still possible to find in its vicinity a set of 15 columns that are still standing, and that leave anyone who stands breathless. in front of them. Likewise, we will find one of the original columns in a horizontal position, since it fell in the 19th century.
In any case, the remains of this building, combined with the bucolic landscape of hills and pine trees that surrounds it, will make us relive one of the most important chapters in the history of humanity and imagine what this place was like during its heyday. and shine.
