Since ancient times, Athens has been one of the main centers of knowledge, philosophy and advancement. Today there are many institutions in the country that are dedicated to teaching, arts and science, but none is as famous as the prominent National Academy of Greece.
The first great Greek academy, which became known throughout the classical world, was Plato’s Academy. This was founded by the prominent philosopher Plato, a former student of Socrates.
In this first school, great philosophical debates were held and the development of science was encouraged. For many years, Plato’s Academy was the main center of knowledge in the region, and important characters in Greco-Roman history were formed there, such as Aristotle, Heraclides and Julian, who was emperor of Rome.
However, Plato’s Academy was censored by the Roman government, especially when it was under the leadership of the Emperor Justinian. Eventually this ancient academy disappeared, and along with it Athenian philosophy went through a period of great decline.
Fortunately, the legacy of Plato’s Academy continues today, with the National Academy of Greece being the symbol of the country’s cultural and scientific renaissance. If you are in Athens you have to get to know it.
Like its predecessor, the National Academy is a research and development focus. There are carried out various studies related to medicine, politics, natural and social sciences, letters, history and the arts.
Similarly, the Academy is divided into 14 research centers, each with its own specialty. In addition, this school building is recognized by the most outstanding Greek universities, numerous international study centers and Athenian citizens.
Likewise, the architectural beauty of the National Academy of Greece is one of its most precious treasures, as it was designed to follow a purely classical style. For this reason, we can appreciate all the decorative details of this educational center, which stand out for its white and gold colors, its imposing rooms, its exquisite works of art, its wonderful sculptures and its classic Doric pillars.
Similarly, in front of the building’s façade there are various statues, such as that of Apollo, an ancient god from Greek mythology who influenced the arts, medicine and poetry. However, the most representative sculptures of the place are those of Plato and Socrates.
On occasion, the National Academy of Greece offers guided tours, which show the various facilities of this educational center, while explaining its history and origins.
Despite this, the most common way to enter the academy is by attending one of its cultural events or scientific exhibitions, which are held throughout the year and sometimes the public is allowed in.
In addition, you can visit the Library of the Academy of Athens, which publishes all the research carried out and approved by specialists in the different areas of research that this house of study has.
