Athens is a modern, fun metropolis, full of history and full of places to discover. In the heart of the city, we find spaces as important as the main square and the parliament building, but hidden among all the hustle and bustle, we find the great treasure of the Greek capital, the National Garden.
Today, Greece is an independent country, it has its own government and Greek cultural traditions are the most practiced throughout the country. But this was not always the case, since this Mediterranean nation was, for many centuries, under Ottoman rule.
Greek independence came in 1832, after a long war of emancipation. However, the problems did not end there, as without Turkish leaders, Greece did not have a formal government.
Later, the Hellenic nation was transformed into a kingdom, and together with the establishment of the monarchy, a project of urban reforms also arrived. One of the spaces that were created at the request of the queen, was the National Garden, an extensive area covered with the most beautiful and exotic plants, which were brought from all over the world.
In its beginnings, this garden was private, and only members of the royal family and the nobility could enter it. Its location, just behind the royal palace, made the National Garden an oasis of peace and quiet.
However, Athenian citizens did not have access to the park until the early 20th century, when it was handed over to the local administration.
If you are going to stroll through the center of Athens, you will probably end your tour at Syntagma Square, located in front of the Parliament building. But although it seems that the tour of Athens ends there, the truth is that there is still much to discover.
So if you want to see the National Garden, all you have to do is walk a little past Parliament, and you will be face to face with the most famous park in the Greek capital.
As you might expect, the National Garden is a popular space, both for tourists and locals. Fortunately, this is not a problem, since in its 160,000 square meters, there is enough room for anyone who wants to visit it.
Also, this beautiful park is known for its great variety of plants, many of which are unique specimens in Greece and can only be found there. In addition to its floral richness, the oasis of Athens also has several animal species and areas dedicated to recreation, including a large fountain, a cafeteria and even a small botanical museum.
The excitement of getting to know a new city is unmatched, but sometimes the pace of a sightseeing trip can be truly exhausting. If you want to rest a little and visit a park so beautiful that it resembles a paradise, then do not hesitate to schedule a visit to the National Garden.
Similarly, the National Garden is the ideal destination to discover a quieter side of Athens, where you can see the plants, enjoy its privileged Mediterranean climate and recharge your batteries to continue discovering all the wonders of this legendary European capital.
