Why was the National Observatory created?

Since ancient times, the Greeks have been known for their incredible academic discoveries, ranging from very important advances in the natural sciences to captivating philosophical theories.

However, the Hellenic nation had to go through very difficult historical periods, in which the study was in the background. This stagnation, which lasted for several centuries, removed Greece from the international scientific scene, as it was a nation that did not have the necessary tools to be able to carry out cutting-edge discoveries and research.

Fortunately, the situation of this beautiful Mediterranean nation changed when, in the middle of the 19th century, it achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire. Since then, the Greeks have made great efforts to recover their academies and create new centers of education.

This initiative has had significant achievements, among which is the National Observatory of Athens, an expert institution in astronomy, which opened its doors in 1842, and is currently continuing to work.

What is the National Observatory like?

The building of the National Observatory of Athens is a small place, especially when compared to other observatories and planetariums of longer range. Despite this, one of the most recognized and valued academies in Greece converges there.

Different types of research and exploration are carried out there, most of them based on proven astronomical ideas. Likewise, one of the first modern telescopes in southern Europe was installed there, and the institution is also recognized as one of the oldest centers for cosmic exploration and meteorological documentation in the region.

Regarding the design of the National Observatory headquarters, it has a clear neoclassical appearance, its facade is adorned by two pillars and a small staircase, while at the top of the building you can see the dome where the telescope is located.

In the same way, the entire construction has an austere air, with little additional decoration and without many details on its walls or windows. However, its surroundings are quite pleasant and quiet, since the National Observatory is located on the second highest hill in Athens, away from the characteristic hustle and bustle of urban areas.
