Modernity and contemporary architecture have completely redesigned the silhouette of the Catalan capital. Now there are hundreds of buildings and numerous skyscrapers, the best known of which is the Agbar Tower.
This great skyscraper is the third tallest in all of Barcelona, it stands out for its oval cylindrical shape and its exterior that seems to be completely covered with glass and windows. This building, inaugurated in 2005, quickly became one of the most famous buildings in Barcelona and in all of Spain.
Its architect and main designer was the French Jean Nouvel, the total cost of the Agbar Tower was € 132,000,000. Its architectural design belongs to the so-called high-tech trend, which leaves aside classical ornamental designs and concentrates on creating structures that are as modern and functional as possible.
The creation of the Agbar Tower was not without controversy, as its design stood out too much from the other structures in Barcelona. The tower’s structure is the only one of its kind in all of Catalonia, so it is impossible for it to go unnoticed with the naked eye.
However, it was her curious form that made her so famous and internationally recognized. Currently, it is the headquarters of numerous offices, service centers, technical facilities, and important Spanish and international firms.
The real name of this important skyscraper is Torre Glòries, and it is located next to the Plaza de las Glorias, at the entrance to the technological district of Barcelona. Despite this, it is still known by its original name, Agbar Tower.
In total, the building has 35 floors, 11 elevators, and a large number of parking spaces. The facade was rebuilt in such a way that it resembled the color and fluidity of water. The stained glass windows and sheets of glass that cover the exterior of the building create an extraordinary play of light, which illuminates the surroundings of the Agbar Tower at night.
The colors of the Agbar Tower can vary, so the tower can be illuminated to celebrate or commemorate special occasions such as World Autism Day, Water Day, World Day for the Fight with AIDS and other annual ephemeris. They are also used to celebrate the New Year and New Years Eve.
Being a modern and technological building, it takes advantage of and maximizes all the resources it has available. Its large windows allow air circulation in addition to taking full advantage of natural light, the elevators are self-regulating to avoid unnecessary energy costs and there are spaces specially designed for parking bicycles.
Despite being one of the largest and most important tourist attractions in Barcelona, Agbar Tower belongs to several private companies, so it is not regularly open to the public.
However, tourists can enjoy the incredible and magnificent light show that it offers every night. Its surrounding areas are always active with different cultural or technological events, so you will definitely find something that catches your attention.
