The traveler who seeks to have an amazing and unrepeatable view of the city of Barcelona does not need to go beyond the ruins of the Carmel Bunkers. A historical place, not very well known, but unique and special where you can contemplate one of the best views of Barcelona.
Built as anti-aircraft fortifications in 1938, during the Spanish Civil War, the bunkers at the top of the Turó de la Rovira hill were located so that they could inspect the entire city of Barcelona.
In addition, large 105mm guns were mounted on the concrete and masonry defenses, and helped protect Barcelona from further bombardment. Once the war was over, the bunkers and their location were partially forgotten.
Due to the same neglect, the bunkers suffered a notable deterioration and remained in that state until the place began to gain popularity.
After the war, the weapons were removed and the bunkers were simply put aside. However, the view from the site was too beautiful to remain hidden for long and eventually the old bunkers became known as a remarkable, albeit a bit remote, place to admire the imposing city of Barcelona.
However, many voices opposed turning the place into a tourist site, given its relationship with the civil war. Because of this, the Carmel bunkers went unnoticed for several decades.
But, as time passed, these bitter memories became more bearable, and historically important sites, such as the Carmel bunkers, began to be used as a local attraction.
In order for the hill fortification to begin to fulfill this new function of attracting visitors from all over the world, improvements and renovations were applied. The last one was done recently and kept the place closed for a few months.
In the 2000s, as the popularity of the site grew, the bunkers received a renovation, as officials wanted to make them more attractive to tourists, as well as to commemorate the old Iberian settlement that is also nearby.
The previously secret site now regularly receives many visitors, but is isolated enough to maintain a certain atmosphere of privacy.
Thanks to the adaptation work to receive visitors, and also the restoration of its spaces, the Carmel bunkers attract more and more visitors, many of whom take advantage of their visit to Barcelona to get here.
From this place the view is 360 degrees and many buildings in Barcelona can be clearly distinguished from the sea view; Hotel Arts, Mapfre Tower, Agbar Tower, Sagrada Familia, Parc de la Ciutadella, Hotel Vela, and the Cathedral, from the mountain view; El Tibidabo and the Telecommunications Tower.
Getting close to the Carmel bunkers is worth it, and the best time to go is during sunset, when the sun sets on the horizon, dimly lighting all of Barcelona. From the Carmel bunkers, this landscape looks so beautiful that it almost seems unreal.
Without a doubt, despite being a little known place in the Catalan capital, once you have the experience of being there, you will want to return many more times.
