The Ciutadella Park is one of the oldest in the city of Barcelona, and is one of the most representative places in the Catalan capital. This park resembles the famous Luxembourg Garden, and is a large open-air museum.
The Ciutadella Park was designed and inaugurated in 1881, being the creation of the Catalan master builder, José Fontseré y Mestre. Fontseré took as inspiration the well-known Luxembourg Garden, symbol of the city of Paris.
In 1888, it was the main venue for the Universal Exhibition of Barcelona, which gave it international fame and recognition. Currently the Ciutadella Park houses various buildings, among which is the Parliament of Catalonia and the Barcelona Zoo.
Its spaces also house numerous works of art, making it the most important open-air museum in the entire city. Like almost all parks, it has fountains, ponds, green areas, and recreation spaces.
The Ciutadella Park is located between the Olympic Village, the Francia Station and the Arc de Triomphe, it is romantic in style and clearly French inspiration, its extension is 17.42 hectares. The park has a wide area of land, which is distributed in a quasi-rectangular way, since it is straight on all sides except in the eastern area, which is semicircular.
It is the most important park in the city of Barcelona, one of its most precious possessions is the Barcelona Zoo. This zoo is home to more than 400 animal species from around the world, its best-known tenant was the unforgettable albino gorilla called Copito de Nieve, a specimen that was unique in the world.
It also has a wide variety of flora that, in Catalonia, can only be found in the Ciutadella Park. Among other natural curiosities, the Ciutadella Park has dinosaur skeletons that can only be found there.
Beyond its natural treasures, the park also has countless architectural jewels such as the Castrense Church, the Monumental Waterfall, the Plaza de Armas, the Governor’s Palace, the Palace of the Parliament of Catalonia, the Greenhouse, the Umbracle and the Castle of the Three Dragons and the Martorell Museum.
As an addition to its cultural value, the Ciutadella Park has numerous monuments that celebrate and commemorate different characters and events in local and national history.
Thanks to all that this enormous and magnificent park has to offer, it was named an Asset of Cultural Interest for the entire Spanish nation.
Due to the size of the park, and all the places of interest within it, visiting it can be a true adventure. You will hardly be able to visit it all in a single day, so if your time in the city is limited, you will have to choose very well which are the parts of the park that you cannot miss.
Do not forget that the park is a place frequented by locals and tourists, do not be surprised if there are people walking there at all times. However, if it is inconvenient to visit the Ciutadella Park.
