In the city of Barcelona we can find one of the oldest astronomical observatories in the world. The Fabra Observatory explores space and many of its mysteries, from a hill in the Catalan capital.
Many Spanish cities are centers for scientific research, with Madrid and Barcelona being the most important. In the main city of the Catalan region, we can find the Museum of Natural Sciences, the Museum of Science and Technology, and of course, the Fabra Observatory.
This observatory was founded in 1894, and was created thanks to the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona. Currently, it is the fourth oldest observatory in the world that is still in operation.
Since its inception, the Fabra Observatory has had two main functions, that of studying comets and asteroids, and that of analyzing meteorological phenomena. From the beginning of the 20th century until the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, the Fabra Observatory was one of the most important and modern in all of Europe, being an astronomical research center of great importance for the scientific community.
In the years that followed, the Fabra Observatory suffered from a lack of budget from the state, and many of its research teams became obsolete. However, today it has recovered part of its former glory, in addition to serving as a museum specializing in astronomical history.
The Observatory is located on Tibidabo, in one of the highest areas of the mountain. From there, the view of the night sky is much clearer than in the city center, which allows astronomical and meteorological exploitation. Officially, it already has 114 years of uninterrupted operation.
How much with a dome that serves as the main observatory, and where is the refractor telescope that is used to study nearby planets, comets, asteroids and minor planets.
The structure of the Fabra Observatory resembles that of a small palace, whose interior spaces are in the modernist style, with the clear exception of the dome, which highlights the appearance of the building.
It is one of the wonders of Barcelona that is worth visiting, despite not attracting as many tourists as other great attractions in the city. It is currently open to the public, and talks and guided tours are offered.
If you are a lover of astronomy and you are passing through the Catalan capital, then you will have plenty of reasons to plan a walk and tour of the observatory. Likewise, if history is your thing and modernist architecture is also to your liking, then this is the perfect place for you.
