Barcelona is a city full of wonders, among which its magnificent buildings with enormous historical and architectural value stand out. One of these buildings is the Hospital de Sant Pau, a world symbol of the modernist style.
During the 19th century, Barcelona experienced an incessant population growth, which gave the city dynamism and liveliness, but at the same time made its old structures melt, becoming small.
This was what happened with the Hospital de Santa Cruz, which could no longer supply and care for the entire Barcelona population that came to its facilities. For this reason, planning began to build a new hospital, which could meet the needs of citizens.
From that moment on, planning began to build what would become the Hospital de Sant Pau i la Santa Creu. The final impulse for the construction of the new hospital to begin came from the businessman and banker Paul Gil, who in his will left a significant amount of money for the construction of a new hospital, which would serve the poor and be always open to locals.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the construction process of a large modernist building officially began, the design of which was the creation of the famous Catalan architect, Lluís Domenech I Montaner.
The Hospital de Sant Pau i la Santa Creu was inaugurated in 1913, becoming the main healthcare center in Catalonia and one of the most important in all of Spain.
The Hospital de Sant Pau i la Santa Creu is not composed of a single building, but there are several. The enclosure has multiple pavilions and different rooms to attend to their patients. Its Catalan modernist design makes it one of the most peculiar and wonderful hospital structures in the world.
Lluís Domenech had in mind to create a hospital that would free itself from the heavy atmosphere that usually accompanies medical care centers. One of its main objectives was to offer patients a spacious, bright and aesthetically pleasing place where they could recover more peacefully.
Likewise, the bright colors of the Sant Pau Hospital stand out, far from the typical neutral tones that were used to paint the walls of the hospitals of the time. The structure also has large windows, delicate stained glass windows, beautiful gardens and other amenities that favored the mood of the patients.
Today, the Hospital de Sant Pau i la Santa Creu has ceased to provide care and has become a large museum. Due to its long history, enormous cultural and architectural relevance, it was recognized as a World Heritage Site by Unesco and as a Site of Cultural Interest.
The Sant Pau Hospital is open to locals and visitors who wish to learn more about Barcelona‘s contemporary past, the Catalan modernist style and the work of Lluís Domenech i Montaner.
The tour of the facilities can be free or guided, and being one of the most important points of interest in the Catalan capital, it usually has a large influx of people. Due to this, it is advisable to plan your visit a few days in advance, so that you can fully enjoy this great experience.
