Green spaces are one of the most precious things any city can have, and if they are full of different types of flowers, plants and monuments, then even better. Brussels can boast of its many parks, and today we are going to visit one of the most famous, the Botanical Garden.
Although its name is Botanical Garden, this park has not fulfilled that function for a long time. In its beginnings, it was part of an old Brussels palace, which underwent a series of reforms when Belgium was under French rule.
With the passing of time, the Botanical Garden became increasingly popular, not only among members of noble families, but among all botanical lovers.
This park stands out for its charming ponds, its fountains, its recreational spaces and, of course, for its collection of plants. These were brought to the site in the mid-19th century, and since then a wide variety of flowers, trees, and plants have been cultivated and preserved, both native to Europe and from other parts of the world.
Later, the Botanical Garden became a meeting place for those interested in horticulture.
Today, this is one of the most notorious parks in the entire Belgian capital, being very popular with locals and a little oasis of tranquility for tourists.
In the same way, the Botanical Garden has a special meaning for the French community of the city and for the French-speaking Belgian citizens, since it is one of the most remarkable legacies that the French rule left in Brussels.
Likewise, this garden was one of the bases on which the current Belgian Botanical Garden was founded, a center specialized in the research, classification and conservation of different types of flora from all continents.
In reality, many of the plants and flowers currently displayed in the National Botanical Garden were first in the park, and then moved to their new location.
Likewise, we can see vestiges of the Botanical Garden’s past in different areas of the park. Its only building, a rotunda with a domed roof, used to serve as a study center for botanists, but today it is a cultural meeting point.
In the rotunda we can also find a small cafeteria and around it there is a row of statues that represent winter, summer and autumn, in addition, there are other sculptures that show two nymphs and an angel holding a laurel.
Knowing a new city is an extraordinary experience, but it can also leave us a little tired at the end of the day.
If you are passing through Brussels and you are looking for a quiet, beautiful, peaceful and serene place to relax, unwind and have a good time, then the Botanical Garden is your perfect option.
There you can take a walk, see its different types of flowers, appreciate its plants, rest in the shade of its trees, eat something in its cafeteria and see its different statues, each one with a special meaning.
Do not wait more! Come to Brussels and discover the Botanical Garden.
