The Guadalquivir river crosses the city of Córdoba, and in its surroundings, some of the most representative monuments of the city rise. Among them, the Puerta del Puente, the Roman Bridge, and of course, the Calahorra Tower stand out, the latter being one of the most representative fortresses in the city.

This construction is an old watchtower, made by the Muslims when Córdoba was under the rule of Ál-Ándalus. Since its inception, the main function of the Calahorra Tower was to protect one of the most important steps in the city, that of the Roman Bridge over the Guadalquivir River.
If the entrance to the bridge was left unprotected, the city could be invaded or besieged, since controlling the Roman Bridge meant blocking the main Cordovan commercial road.
Based on that, the Calahorra Tower was designed as a powerful fortification, capable of housing the city’s vigilantes and warning of any possible external threat.
Over the centuries, the tower became a key defense point for the Castilian kings who took over Cordoba. Many of them reformed and expanded it, to create the Calahorra Tower that today stands next to the Roman Bridge.

The tower has a clear Mudejar design, which is complemented by some features of classic Spanish military architecture, such as barbcans and embrasures.
It is important to note that the current Calahorra Tower is not a single structure, but three. The one in the center is the original one, while the ones on the sides were added later.
All this set, joined by internal bridges and stairs, forms the modern structure of the Calahorra Tower.
Likewise, and being a construction of a military nature, the exterior facades are austere, and lack ostentatious decorations or striking colors. The interior of the tower is also simple, although there you can find important examples of Moorish design, such as the columns, the arches and the internal layout.
Similarly, the Calahorra Tower is a very important site of cultural interest, whose historical value is widely recognized throughout Spain. This distinction led to it being cataloged as a Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, a recognition that became official in 1994.

Lovers of history, culture and architecture cannot miss this place, which is full of mysteries and secrets to discover.
In addition, if you go for a walk to the Torre de la Calahorra, you can be sure that the entertainment will not be lacking, since the place also houses the Living Museum of Al-Ándalus.
This fascinating museum tells, through theatrical performances and guided tours, the long history of the city of Córdoba. The three great cultures and religions that gave identity to the city are given special importance; the Muslim, the Spanish and the Jewish.
In the Living Museum of Al-Andalus, all of them coexist within the fascinating Calahorra Tower.
