Munich, like many other European cities, has a historical center of great social and cultural importance. In it, in Karlspltaz, one of the most recognized squares in the place, as well as one of the busiest and most visited by locals. Do you want to meet her? Let’s go there!
The current name of this famous square was established in 1797, to honor the then Duke of Bavaria, Carlos de Wittelsbach. This ruler was known for promoting various urban reforms in the city, which had just demolished its walls and was expanding beyond its historical borders.
However, the square that bears his name was not his own creation, it has already existed for years, although it was not officially recognized as a public square.
In fact, many inhabitants of old Munich refused to adopt the new name, continuing to refer to the square as Stachus, as it was previously known.
Today, Karlsplatz is not only a pretty and historic square, it is also one of the main thoroughfares in the city. The area has its own metro station, several bus stops and a large influx of vehicles.
If you go to Munich, you will most likely find yourself at Karlsplatz, even if it was not listed on your itinerary. This is due to the location of the square, since being so central, it is almost an obligation to walk through it to be able to go from one area of Munich to another.
In addition, Karlsplatz is an important shopping area. It is surrounded by numerous shops, bank branches, restaurants and cafes. Similarly, near the square there is a wide variety of hotels and places to stay, which is why it is very visited by foreign tourists.
One of the main attractions of Karlsplatz is its underground shopping center, which is located just below the square. This large space has many more shops and small businesses, where you can find different souvenirs from your trip to Munich. The place also functions as the Karlsplatz subway station.
But this is not all, in Karlsplatz there is more to see. Among its most prominent buildings we can mention the Puerta de Carlos, which is a small wall with a large central entrance, this served to receive travelers who arrived in the city after the old walls were dismantled.
Also, don’t forget to visit its beautiful central fountain and pass near the imposing Palace of Justice.
