Where does Karlsplatz square come from?

The current name of this famous square was established in 1797, to honor the then Duke of Bavaria, Carlos de Wittelsbach. This ruler was known for promoting various urban reforms in the city, which had just demolished its walls and was expanding beyond its historical borders.

However, the square that bears his name was not his own creation, it has already existed for years, although it was not officially recognized as a public square.

In fact, many inhabitants of old Munich refused to adopt the new name, continuing to refer to the square as Stachus, as it was previously known.

Today, Karlsplatz is not only a pretty and historic square, it is also one of the main thoroughfares in the city. The area has its own metro station, several bus stops and a large influx of vehicles.
