In its early days, the Luxembourg Gardens were part of the Luxembourg Palace, which was built for the Queen consort of France, Maria de Medici.
The sovereign was not satisfied with her royal residence, so she decided to create her own castle, which should have immense and pleasant gardens. However, in the original design of the Palais des Luxembourg, the green spaces were considerably small.
With the passage of time, the gardens expanded, until they became a large park. As the gardens grew, the political situation in France changed.
When the Royal Family was deposed during the revolution of 1789 and 1790, the Luxembourg Palace was turned into a prison, and the gardens were neglected. Later, in the 20th century, the Luxembourg Gardens had to survive the worst days of the Second World War, when they were used as a barracks and bunker.
Today, the difficult past of the French capital is behind us, and the Luxembourg Gardens are a must-see tourist spot for all who visit Paris.
No single design is present in this space of 23 hectares. It is a harmonious blend of classical French garden and romantic English garden. This duality of styles makes the park is considered one of the most beautiful in Paris.
Initially, Marie de Medici had the Luxembourg Gardens designed in the likeness of her childhood gardens in Florence. Over time they were transformed into the classic French garden of tree-lined avenues and symmetrical lines.
In the 19th century, part of the park was redesigned in the purest English style, with more lush vegetation, where winding paths appear and in general a more natural and free atmosphere is perceived.

The Luxembourg Gardens are usually open in the early hours of the morning, as the sun begins to rise, and they stay open until late at night. If there is a special event in the park, it can stay open longer.
The best time of year to visit it is during spring, which corresponds to the months of March to June. At this time of year, the flowers in the gardens bloom, the lawns and trees look greener, and the park’s cultural offering is reborn.
